Teenagers are the most common victims of violent crime

The age group with the highest representation for crime resulting in bodily harm is between 12 and 17 years old.

It would come as a surprise to many to learn that the most common victim of violent crime is under 18 years of age, StatsCanada's 2017 report on violent crimes is helpfully broken down by both age and gender, which allows for an insightful view on how different groups are affected by what crimes. These statistics raise some concerning questions regarding which age group is most represented in this type of crime.

The data here shows that women between the ages of 12 and 17 are the most likely to report being victims of violent crime, regardless of gender. Further examination of the data reveals exactly where this lead come from.

Breaking down the data further, it can be seen that the cause for the spike in victimization for women aged 12 to 17 is due to sexual assault. This age group is so grossly over represented due to the general vulnerability and presence of authority figures, both schools and sports groups are major points of concern for these types of crimes. There has been a notable increase in sexual assault reports since 2017. This is likely due to the #MeToo movement that began in response to the Weinstein sexual assault cases.

This graph here shows where young males are being over represented, though not to a severe degree. Young men are more likely to be involved in physical altercations with each other, such as schoolyard fights, which leads to both being charged with assault.

With these crime types combined this youthful age group far overshadows that on any other group, despite being well below the age of majority.

  1. Your final report was very good. It didn't just provide one chart but multiple so good job. The sources that you used were good and helped to display the accuracy of your charts, overall well done!

  2. Hi boo!
Your charts are clear and support your report, as well as your supporting articles. I was surprised to learn that the common age group was between 12 and 17. Showing your data per 100,000 really puts the numbers in perspective as well. Good job!

  3. As you mentioned at the beginning of your post, I was definitely surprised to learn that the highest rates of violent crime are for youth between 12 and 18 years old. It's great that you incorporated the additional two charts. It makes more sense to see women overrepresented in the first chart when you consider that the majority of those numbers come from sexual assault, as you showed in the second chart. I also liked the sources that you included, and the fact that you made evidence-based suggestions as to why, for example, sexual assault reports increased since 2017. My only note is that it looks like the post is a little bit shorter than the minimum length. Otherwise, well done!

  4. I am a little surprised teens are the most common victims of violent crimes especially from the ages of 12-17. Your chart demonstrates effectively of the male-to-female comparisons, while also highlighting he most common offences. I would be interested in seeing a bit more detail in your response though the articles about your dataset. Otherwise good work!

  5. You've done a good job of explaining your findings and I like how you've broken down the figures in various ways (gender, age, type of assault). Your links to external sources supplement your own findings well.

I think the fact that you chose a form of bar chart is good, although the specific format that you used isn't as clear as if you simply had two bars side-by-side for each gender. Having one inside the other (I can't recall the specific name for this style) seems like it would be more appropriate if the blue line represented a sub-category of the black line (representing a proportion of a whole). Other than that, good job on all your updates and the report.
