2. Describe the dataset. What kind of data does it contain?
The dataset contains information regarding bodily harm or death caused by violent crime and traffic offences, broken down by sex and age group. The data also categories by crimes, which will allow for in depth examination of crimes against age and sex groups.
3. Is there anything about your data you don't understand?
I understand the data very well, the information is clear and concise. The only point of confusion I had was the category labeled 'Sexual Violations against children', it included statistics for persons over 18, though I figured that this was due to either occurrences on birthdays or delayed reports.
4. what are some questions you hope to answer with your data? list at least three.
What age/sex group is the most commonly targeted?
What crime is most often committed against this group?
What age/sex group is the least commonly targeted?
What is the most common offence resulting in bodily harm?
What is the most common crime against males?
What is the most common crime against females?
You chose a good dataset for your report, and I like that you can look specifically at different age and sex groups to determine how certain people are more at risk than others of becoming victims.
ReplyDeleteAll your questions are good and would be interesting to know the answers to, although I think you could probably dig a little deeper into the data to obtain some more specific findings. I don't think it would surprise many people that females over 18 are the most targeted group. Your ability to look at age groups is limited by the fact that 18 and over is open-ended and will naturally be more common than under 18 age groups. Perhaps with some supplementary data you could come across some more interesting or specific findings. For example, by comparing the share of crimes against youths to the percentage of the population that is under 18, are youths still at a lower risk of becoming victims? By what margin? Or, by adding recent years to your dataset, are these rates increasing or decreasing? By how much?
I realize these questions would require some additional--and perhaps more complicated--data, but there is a lot of potential information in this dataset and you have only scratched the surface of it with your current questions.
Overall, you clearly understand the data well and should be able to come to some interesting findings with it. I just think that there are more relevant or potentially surprising results to be found if you dig a little deeper.
This sounds like a very interesting dataset and when the information on Sexual Violations against children' does seem a little strange so it would be interesting to see that clarified. I believe this was one of the first data sets I saw myself and also found one that broke this information down my geography and then also the data set you have chosen. Don't know if that will help but maybe checking out the geography of the crimes might be interesting as well.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a very interesting topic. I find it interesting to compare the results of the common offences/crimes that occur between male and females. I think that if you add more information regarding the geography of the incidents, it would be much more insightful and interesting. Some areas in Canada have higher crime rates resulting in bodily harm, and I'm wondering if some areas have a higher percentage of that than others.
